Understanding Tire Numbers
Let's take a closer look at an example to help you understand each section of a typical tire code:
Example: P215/65R15 95H
This code may look complex, but it tells you everything you need to know about the tire's specs:
Tire Type -- P
P stands for "P-Metric," indicating the tire is designed for passenger vehicles. You may also see:
- LT: Light Truck tires
- No letter: Euro-Metric tires, which may have different load capacities
Tire Width -- 215
This number represents the width of the tire in millimetres, measured from sidewall to sidewall. Here, the tire is 215 mm wide.
Aspect Ratio -- 65
This is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tire's width. In this case, the height is 65% of the width (215 mm).
Construction -- R
R indicates a radial tire, which is the most common type of construction today.
Rim Diameter -- 15
This is the diameter of the wheel (rim) in inches. A "15" means the tire fits a 15-inch wheel.
Load Index & Speed Rating -- 95H
95 is the load index, which tells you how much weight the tire can support when properly inflated. A 95 rating typically supports up to 690 kg per tire.
H is the speed rating, indicating the maximum speed the tire can safely handle. An "H" rating means the tire can reach up to 210 km/h.
